So I thought I'd repeat that process and reformat + reinstall. After I chose the safest format option (the one that takes several hours); I tried to install OSX again (via the internet since I have no disks). Everytime I tried to login with my apple-id it said 'this item is temporarily unavailable'. To my surprise, it turned on just fine. The problem is after factory resetting it, I can’t seem to reinstall OS X. The latest version available is OS X El Capitan (OS X 10.11). When I try to install OS X to the disk “Mac.” After that, it has me sign into the App Store, then I get the message “This item is temporarily unavailable. Reinstall El Capitan on a computer already running it. Reinstall while keeping files, applications, and settings; Reinstall while erasing everything on your computer; Upgrade from previous versions to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) From the Apple menu, select App Store. When the App Store opens, search for and download El Capitan. This item is temporarily unavailable.Try again later. After reading Wiped drive, now can’t reinstall El Capitan from Recovery because the “item is temporarily unavailable”, I supplied a different set of icloud credentials, and the process continued. Eventually, however, the installation failed with a different message.

Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click the gear icon labelled Options, then click Continue.

  • Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac may restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen may be empty for minutes at a time.

When the installation is complete, your Mac may restart to a setup assistant. If you're selling, trading in or giving away your Mac, press Command-Q to quit the assistant without completing setup. Then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete the setup process.

When you install macOS from Recovery, you get the current version of the most recently installed macOS, with some exceptions:

  • On an Intel-based Mac: if you use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup, you'll be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version that is still available. If you use Option-Command-R during startup, in most cases you'll be offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac. Otherwise you'll be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version that is still available.
  • If the Mac logic board was just replaced, you may only be offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac. If you've just erased your entire startup disk, you may only be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version that is still available.

You can also use these methods to install macOS, if the macOS is compatible with your Mac:

  • Use the App Store to download and install the latest macOS.
  • Use the App Store or a web browser to download and install an earlier macOS.
  • Use a USB flash drive or other secondary volume to create a bootable installer.

I have an old 2007 iMac that has a broken operating system. I am automatically redirected to recovery mode on it, and try to reinstall MacOS Yosemite, but it was used and we don't know the apple id to fix it, and it keeps throwing the error 'this item is temporarily unavailable'. The good news is that I have a MacBook Air 2020 that works perfectly fine, but we can't seem to install OS X El Capitan 10.11 on it because it keeps saying 'update not found. the requested version of macos is not available.' on the Mac App Store.Here is the link I tried to install it from:https://apps.apple.com/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1147835434?mt=12I need to install this on my computer first and then use the 'createinstallmedia' command in terminal to load it onto a USB flash drive.PS: I have tried installing the dmg of this and restoring to the USB in Disk Utility but it did not load in startup mode when you restart your mac and press and hold 'option' and I don't wan't to go through the pain of doing it this way again;Ok, my question: How do I fix this 'update not found' error when trying to install El Capitan from the Mac App Store on my 2020 MacBook Air?Thanks!
